If you read and speak
a language other than English, you have the opportunity
to satisfy one
of the following breadth requirements that have lower-division
language course options:
1. Language Other
Than English (Category
VI) breadth requirement. This requirement consists of
competency through the 1C level of language course work (or
its equivalent).
Demonstrating competency through the 1C and/or 2A levels
of UCI language course work may fulfill the Category
VI requirement.
2. International/Global
Issues (Category
VII-B) breadth requirement. Beginning in Fall 2004, the
VII-B requirement has been expanded to two courses instead
of one. Demonstrating competency through the 2A level of
UCI language course work may fulfill the new second course
of the requirement. *
You should
take the language breadth exam if you have a strong background
in a language other than English. Tests are available in
all of the languages listed on the right. To inquire about
the availability of tests in other languages, contact the
Testing Center directly.
Each exam may be taken
only once. No university credit is given. No fee is required
to take an exam if you are a currently enrolled UCI student.
Registration for these
exams is restricted to the second week of each quarter. To
register, please come in person with two photo IDs to the
Testing Center during that week. Results
will not be available by telephone; rather you will be notified
via e-mail. Notification will be sent to your academic unit
during Finals Week. However, the results will not appear
on your transcript.
If you need
further information on language testing, please e-mail the
Testing Center at testcenter@uci.edu,
